The best companies know that innovative thinking is the only competitive advantage that can’t be outsourced, and the best schools are those with deep cultures of creative problem solving. But both innovation and creativity depend on imagination first: the ability and willingness to conceive of what is not. Fortunately, it is something we can all cultivate—with practice.

It all started when 14-year-old Hannah Salwen had a “eureka moment." Seeing a homeless man in her neighborhood alongside a Mercedes, she said “You know, Dad, if that man had a less nice car, maybe that man there could have a meal.”
Until that day the Salwens had been caught up in the American Dream: providing a good life for their children, accumulating more stuff. As a family they made the extraordinary decision to sell their Atlanta mansion, downsize to a house half the size and give half the profit to a worthy charity.
Their plan eventually transported them across the globe and well out of their comfort zone, and in the end they learned that they had the power to change a little corner of their world. And they found themselves changing, too.
Kevin Salwen was a reporter and editor at the Wall Street Journal for more than 18 years and a founder of the magazine Motto. He serves on the board of Habitat for Humanity. Hannah Salwen is a junior at the Atlanta Girl’s School, where she plays for the varsity volleyball team. Hannah has volunteered since 5th grade at the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Café 458.

Beyond what we already know about “food miles” and eating locally, the global food system is a major contributor to climate change, producing as much as one third of greenhouse gas emissions. How we farm, what we eat, and how our food gets to the table all have an impact.
Anna Lappe is the coauthor of Grub, Hope’s Edge and currently host of MSN’s Practical Guide to Healthy Living, and co host of PBS’s The Endless Feast. Lappe will outline a vision of the future in which our food system does more good than harm, with six principles for an earth-friendly diet, fueled by sustainable farming.
